One of my favorite times of day is right at dusk, when the sky is settling in for the night and our little brown bats sneak out to dance against that dimming backdrop. I can’t remember ever seeing one dart out of the corner of my eye without instinctively saying, “A bat!”

They feel like brown-winged secrets, dependably popping out of their hidden places to remind us that a whole world is awakening just as we’re heading to bed. They have a way of linking us to the mystery of childhood, when the idea of a vibrant, nighttime world unfolding outside our windows felt as magical as the fairy tales we drifted off to.

A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects in an hour, a vital part of our Louisiana food chain for sure. Beyond their role in keeping balance around us, they keep us in wide-eyed wonder as the only flying mammals left today.
